WAZA Virtual Annual Conference DATES: 12-15 October
Join us for the WAZA 2020 Virtual Annual Conference from 12-15 October. Featuring international speakers, opportunities for immersive and collaborative discussions as well as virtual networking with colleagues from the global WAZA community.
Welcome Letter from the WAZA President
The COVID-19 pandemic has challenged our teams and institutions, and the past few months have probably presented one of the hardest challenges we have had to face in our professional lives. We are still trying to understand the full consequences the pandemic and lockdowns will have on our zoos, aquariums, and businesses.
This year we have our 75th Annual Conference which should become something very special. With our colleagues from San Diego Global we already had exciting plans. But now, with this new scenario, this conference will be very special but in another way. We will not hold a face-to-face conference for the first time in the 75 years of WAZA Annual Conferences. It was not an easy decision to make, as I know for me and many members, the WAZA Annual Conference is not only a fantastic opportunity to listen to presentations, share knowledge and best practices, but is the one time a year where we can all come together and meet as colleagues and friends – the WAZA family.
However, we are very excited about the new digital format for this year’s Virtual Conference. It will make the conference more accessible to all of our valued members, as well as the wider community. Through our regular conference app
Whova, there will still be opportunities for networking and engaging directly with the presentations and discussions.
We will discuss lessons learned through these past months and how we are all adapting together to continue our strong commitment toward the protection of the animals and species under our care.
The WAZA Executive office team is leading the coordination of the conference. We want to thank San Diego Global for all their hard work and planning they had put into the conference that was due to take place in San Diego this year. However, we will still return to San Diego in 2023 for the 78th WAZA Annual Conference.
I look forward to connecting with you all in October.
Sincerely yours, and take care
Prof Theo Pagel
